It’s that time of year when people across Britain begin planning their summer holidays. And for many, one destination remains firmly at the top of the list – Spain. Every year, millions of Brits jet off to enjoy the sunshine, food, and stunning scenery the country has to offer. 

One of the most popular Spanish spots is Majorca, and within it, the seaside resort of Magaluf has become a firm favourite for its nightlife and beaches. But with the holiday season fast approaching, the town’s mayor has issued an apology to visitors over ongoing building work. Juan Antonio Amengual, Mayor of Calvià (the municipality that includes Magaluf) said he was sorry for the disruption caused by construction on the town’s main promenade.

However, he promised the upgrade would ultimately transform the resort for the better.

The mayor was speaking during a visit with Spain’s Minister for Tourism, Jordi Hereu Boher, who praised the investments being made across the country to improve tourist hotspots.

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Magaluf’s promenade is being revamped in two phases.

The first phase began in October 2024 and is expected to finish in May, just in time for the start of the summer rush. A second phase is planned for the same period in 2025/2026.

Originally, the building work was set to continue through the peak summer months, but the local council made an agreement with contractors to bring the schedule forward to avoid maximum disruption.

Despite the mayor’s apology, some in the local business community have voiced frustration, pointing out that the works are still ongoing just weeks before the start of the holiday season.

As part of wider plans to improve the area, Calvià Council has also purchased the Hotel Teix in Magaluf. It will be demolished and turned into a public park.

Magaluf continues to be a top choice for British holidaymakers, with thousands visiting each year. 

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, the Balearic Islands welcomed more than 15.1 million international tourists between January and November 2024, with the UK being the largest source of visitors.

Across Spain, over 88.5 million international tourists visited during that period, setting a new record. 

British tourists made up more than 17.5 million of those arrivals, contributing the highest level of overall tourist spending, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute.

Magaluf, once known primarily for being the nightlife capital, has been working to rebrand itself in recent years. 

Alongside the clubs and bars, it now offers high-end beach clubs, modern hotels, family-friendly attractions and activities including water parks, go-karting and live entertainment.
